The strangest driver's problem ever…

I have the strangest problem with drivers ever. I am an owner of MAtrox
G200 (8MB), K6 200MHz, Mainboard on VIA MPV3 chipset, 128 MB of RAM,
Warp 4 UK, Fixpack12 US.

Problem description:

Version 2.23 of matrox drivers works OK here, version 2.36 turns monitor
into sleeping mode, when deksktop should be started – nothing loads in
the background. SDD (beta from IBM, or B22) displays a black screen when
loading desktop, but desktop loads in background (I can hear it) –
gactrl reports than it cannot establish DDC2 communications, displays
black screen when testing modes with more tahn 8bit colours.

The story:

Old versions of SDD have worked here. I don’t remember when the system
begun to hang – mouse cursor just stopped moving – there was only a blue
background when system were booting again, no mouse cursor. After
fighting all day, I’d switched form 16M to 65k colors – and it worked.
But system was rarely hanging with same problem – I had to shake card in
the slot a little bit, and the system was loading desktop properly. I
thought that it is video card problem – tried another matrox – same
thing. I’ce changed the mainboard – system stopped hanging (running 16M
colours for about a week), but same problems with matrox drivers 3.36
and SDD. I’ve trtied another model of K6 200 – nothing changes. It can’t
be a memory too, because it happend also when I had old dimms in my
mainboard.

With SDD it is more complicated – gactrl was correctly doing DDC on the
old mainboard, and was displaying with more than 8bit colours – but with
worng palette. It was also loading the desktop, but with a green-black
or blue-black palette. One day I was experimanting with this program and
after cycle of test: 4bit, 8bit, 16bit, 24bit, 8bit, when I tried 24 bit
again – only black screen. After that desktop was not loading in the
wrong palette, but just a black screen. I’ve tried ddc on the new
mainboard – wasn’t working.

Could you please help me? It is the strangest problem that I’ve ever
had.

How to preserve WPS settings when reinstalling

Hi,

I am contemplating a switch to Linux and WMware running OS/2 as guest.
Main reason is that WARP does not support SMP.

I would appreciate an advice or a pointer to instructions how to preserve
all WPS and other settings so that I would not have to reconfigure the
whole machine after re-installing OS/2 in the VMware.  I intend to backup
all application directories, but what about all personalized folders and
other settings different from the default?  As my system has been used
since early WARP CONNECT days, I do not even remember everything I changed
in the system over the years :-)

Does OS/2 choke on Power Management?

I’m stumped.  Do you know if OS/2 chokes on Energy Star compliant
monitors?  I went through the install three times.  The first time I
thought I saw something about Power Management but I can’t find it.  I
really don’t want to disable Power Management in my BIOS but if there’s no
other way around it I guess I will — if *that* even works.

Here’s the skinny:
New PC with AMD-Athlon 700 on FIC SD11 ATX Mainboard,
AMI BIOS (NC604, 09/10/1999),
128MB RAM,
20GB MAXtor 7200 Ultra DMA/66,
ATI 8MB PCI Video pumping to an NEC MultiSync 90,
Creative Labs DVD (works in CD-ROM mode at least; more to follow?),
Creative Labs SB-Live 512 (not concious of drivers being installed), 3COM
EtherLink XL PCi Network Card (drivers not installed yet), PCMCIA, USB not
even gonna try at this point,

Installation Diskettes upgraded to support EIDE HDDs 8.4GB and above.

Boot Manager on Cylinder 1, OS/2 on Cyliners 2 through 26.  No other
partitions are formatted at this time.

Boot goes through normal BIOS checks, OS/2 loader, splash screen.  But
then the screen blanks as if PM is going to start loading and the monitor
goes to standby (the little green light goes orange).

This is all after an otherwise uneventful installation with the following
exceptions:

1. It seems that the normal cycle for processing locked files gets done
twice.

2. I have an extra line on my C:\Config.Sys: SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1 (or
something like that, part of the 8.4GB support).

3. I’ve never had Advanced Power Management try to install except with
Warp3 on a laptop and that never worked worth beans.  I’ve tried this with
and without with no apparent difference.

So what is it?  Is it the video card, the monitor, Warp, some combination
thereof, something else?

Take care,
Duane

OS2LDR memory patch

Daniela’s OS2LDR memory patch mentions install failuer

"If step 3 fails, an error message will be displayed. If it succeeds,
the
old OS2LDR is copied to OS2LDR.bak, and a new, patched OS2LDR is
created."

but does not suggest a solution.

Warp4-Win98-Linux question

I did a total reinstall of my ThinkPad 600 and put Warp 4, Win98 and
Linux (Mandrake 7.02) on it. For the first time, I put Warp before
Windoze in order to minimize problems using FAT32.IFS. Now it works
fine, but since both Warp and Windoze are on primary partitions, Warp
can’t see the Windoze partition.

Questions: can win98 boot from an extended logical partition? I seemed
to remember it couldn’t be done in the past, but maybe I’m confusing
things with DOS. What is the minimum size for a FAT32 partition? I had
created a 400 MB FAT16 partition for windoze, and when I tried to
convert it to FAT32 after the installation, the conversion program
told be it was too small for FAT32.

I apologize for the mostly windoze questions, but I thought someone
would have bumped into similar issues.

Thanks, Dominique

FYI, good news… PDFs with IBMWorks + GhostScript

FYI

I discovered something: a PS file created from a word-processor
document with IBMWorks (FootPrint) is 50% smaller than a PS file
containing the identical text in AmiPro 3.

The PDF generated from IBMWorks is two orders of magnitude ~smaller~
than the PDF generated by AmiPro!

I also used the IBMWorks spreadsheet to generate a PDF with colour
charts. It came out nicely… and SMALL.
